VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE BEAUTY & SPA SERVICES TO WOMEN LIVING WITH CANCER

Nurture, soothe, rejuvenate and transform are not words usually associated with cancer. Until now.

Prescription Well-Being is a 501 C-3 non-profit organization devoted to helping women and children deal with the changes in their appearance while living with cancer. Studies have shown that touch can be a powerful elixir for individuals suffering from disease, resulting in positive physical as well as psychological benefits. Prescription Well-Being volunteers offer spa services on location including facials, massage, manicures, pedicures, makeup applications and haircuts.

Founded in 2001 after a Nordstrom co-worker and friend lost her battle with cancer, it began as a small group of volunteers visiting Northwestern Hospital\'s oncology ward each week, each with the same mission- help those living with cancer to deal with the changes in their appearance. To Stacey's delight, the group grew as the years progressed and, eventually, Prescription Well-Being too shape. While this mission is, thankfully, being met, a larger objective is now before us. Led by founder Stacey Roney, the new goal for Prescription Well-Being is to open a spa which will provide free spa and beauty services to women and children living with cancer.

SPA DAY AT CHILDREN’S MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Recently, Prescription Well-Being’s team of volunteers spent the day at Children's Memorial Hospital offering mini manicures, makeup lessons, hair styling, face painting, temporary tattoos and a magic show to the children. The parents were treated to facials, massages, and manicures.

Debi Lilly from A Perfect Event, transformed the room with decorations and balloons. Amanda Sudimack from Artisan Events, took photos of the children and their parents during the party and gave each attendee the photo in a frame as a momento of the day. Each guest received a goodybag filled with toys and age appropriate beauty products.

Over thirty patients attended the four hour event. The response was very positive as it allowed the patients and their parentsan escape and gave them an opportunity to focus on something other than cancer.
